Jason Dark

Jason Dark (born Helmut Rellergerd, 1945) is a German author of horror detective fiction best known for the long-running pulp series Geisterjäger John Sinclair. His books have sold hundreds of millions of copies, and the series has been released weekly since 1978. His work has been compared with that of Arthur Conan Doyle, and he has been described as one of the most widely read genre writers in Germany.

Helmut Rellergerd was born in Dahle, Sauerland, and grew up in Dortmund. After finishing school and completing his service in the Bundeswehr, he wrote his first novel, which publishers rejected. His first published work appeared in a crime series by Bastei Verlag, but it was his 1973 novel Die Nacht des Hexers (The Night of the Hexer) that introduced the demon hunter John Sinclair and launched his career.

Jason Dark said that his wife’s dislike of the fictional television detective Jason King inspired the choice of the first name “Jason.” At the same time, the surname “Dark” followed naturally from its association with supernatural violence.

John Sinclair, an inspector for Scotland Yard, became the central figure of an expanding universe of vampire hunts, occult conspiracies and apocalyptic threats. Written in short-booklet form, the series ran for thousands of instalments and was later expanded into audio dramas, paperbacks, and a television series.

Tony Page, a literary scholar, praised Dark’s imagination and quoted a critic who claimed that Dark’s inventive power exceeded Conan Doyle’s. The author remarked that many readers found the stories helpful during illness, thanks to the hero’s relentless optimism.

Dark wrote many of the early novels on his own, but later became part of a team of authors. In interviews, he expressed satisfaction with the adaptations of his stories for audio plays, praising how long-running plotlines were condensed and restructured. He noted that continuity required alterations and welcomed the creative decisions of directors who, as he said, “zerbrechen uns gemeinsam den Kopf” when planning story arcs.

Beyond John Sinclair, Rellergerd created other horror series such as Professor Zamorra and Damona King. Under the name Red Geller, he wrote youth fiction and, from 2006 onward, produced the Don Harris Psycho-Cop crime series. He lives in Bergisch Gladbach and described himself as Catholic.
