Adeline Virginia Woolf (née Stephen) was an English novelist and essayist regarded as one of the foremost modernist literary figures of the twentieth century. During the interwar period, Woolf was a significant figure in London literary society and a member of the Bloomsbury Group.

Her most famous works include the novels Mrs. Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927), and Orlando (1928), and the book-length essay A Room of One's Own (1929) with its famous dictum, "a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction."

Born into a privileged English household in 1882, author Virginia Woolf was raised by free-thinking parents. She began writing as a young girl and published her first novel, The Voyage Out, in 1915. She wrote modernist classics, as well as pioneering feminist works, A Room of One's Own and Three Guineas.

In her personal life, she suffered bouts of deep depression. She committed suicide in 1941, at the age of 59.

Throughout her career, Woolf spoke regularly at colleges and universities, penned dramatic letters, wrote moving essays and self-published a long list of short stories.

By her mid-forties, she had established herself as an intellectual, an innovative and influential writer and pioneering feminist. Her ability to balance dream-like scenes with deeply tense plot lines earned her incredible respect from peers and the public alike.

The writer was often accused of anti-Semitism. Her story "The Duchess and the Jeweler" (1938) was so profound in its hateful portrayal of Jews that Harper's Bazaar asked her to change it before publication.

Despite her outward success, she continued to suffer regularly from debilitating bouts of depression and severe mood swings.

Virginia Woolf still remains one of the most influential authors of the 21st century.

His understanding often astonished her. But did he notice the flowers? No. Did he notice the view? No. Did he even notice his own daughter's beauty, or whether there was pudding on his plate or roast beef? He would sit at table with them like a person in a dream. And his habit of talking aloud, or saying poetry aloud, was growing on him, she was afraid; for sometimes it was awkward—

There is the white house lying among the trees. It lies down there ever so far beneath us. We shall sink like swimmers just touching the ground with the tips of their toes. We shall sink through the green air of the leaves, Susan. We sink as we run. The waves close over us, the beech leaves meet above our heads.

Великолепное феминистское эссе-расследование о том, какого это было быть писательницей (и женщиной в целом) раньше.

Удивительно, как вообще появились и не были тотчас же сожжены произведения, написанные женщинами до 20 века. Да и в 20 тоже.

А уж о том, сколько стихов и романов не были созданы женщинами просто потому что «обычай бережёт от знаний женские умы / и хороши лишь тех, кто тих и благонравен» — больно подумать.

Насколько богаче была бы литература и искусство в целом, появись у женщин возможность выражать свои мысли и распоряжаться талантами, а не только подчиняться мужским указаниям, раньше.

Может показаться, что в эссе на каждой странице мужчины будут поливаться помоями. Но Вулф слишком умна для этого и знает, что феминизм — это не про то, что мужчины должны исчезнуть с планеты, чтобы женщины наконец-то вздохнули. Даже если порой и хочется позлиться — не получится. Вирджиния призывает к справедливости:

«...в человеческом сознании тоже есть два пола и им тоже необходимо соединиться для полного удовлетворения и счастья? И я схематично представила себе, как в человеческой душе уживаются два начала, мужское и женское; в мужском сознании тон задает мужчина, а в женском женщина.
Нормальное, спокойное состояние приходит, лишь когда эти двое живут в гармонии, духовно сотрудничая. Пусть ты мужчина, все равно женская половина твоего сознания должна иметь голос; так и женщина должна прислушиваться к своему напарнику. Только при полном слиянии мужской и женской половин сознание зацветает и раскрывается во всех своих способностях. Видимо, чисто мужское сознание не способно к творческой деятельности, как, впрочем, и чисто женское».

Вулф просит нас поднапрячься, говоря, что мы — «позорно отстали от жизни». Хоть она и рассказывала все это студенткам 100 лет назад, кажется, она говорит мне это здесь и сейчас. И как-то хочется реально начать писать регулярно — пусть все недосказанное приобретет наконец-то словесные очертания. И тогда через сто еще лет какая-нибудь девушка возьмётся за эту книгу и поймёт, что она не актуальна — мы, ныне живущие, исправили ситуацию.
