Edward Michael Grylls was raised on the Isle of Wight and educated at Eaton House, Ludgrove School and Eton College, where he co-founded the Mountaineering Club. He later studied Spanish and German at the University of the West of England and Birkbeck College, graduating in 2002 with a BA in Hispanic Studies.

In 2007, Grylls published Born Survivor: Bear Grylls, the companion book to his television series. The book offered practical survival advice and became a bestseller, cementing his reputation as an authority on outdoor skills. "I write to share lessons learned the hard way. Adventure and survival teach resilience,” Grylls said.

The series, including Way of the Wolf (2009) and Sands of the Scorpion (2010), became popular with children and educators alike.

His autobiography, Mud, Sweat and Tears (2011), received widespread acclaim and was named one of The Guardian's best autobiographies for children and young people. Grylls described it as "an honest account of the highs and lows that have shaped my journey". The book was named the most influential book in China in 2012.

Grylls continued to diversify his work with thrillers such as Ghost Flight (2015) and Burning Angels (2016), as well as spiritual reflections in Soul Fuel (2019). In 2022, he published Mind Fuel, which focuses on mental resilience, which he describes as "a crucial part of living well".
