Becoming your own friend means taking care of yourself the way you would someone that you love. And that’s hard. But it is necessary.

(Birthmas is the tragic combined holiday that comes when you were born a few days after Christmas and everyone is too exhausted to
care and everything you open during the holiday comes with a quick “That’s for your birthday too” notation.)

And it makes you rethink a lot of your choices … like my choice to ignore things I don’t want to think about until they are literally on fire around me, which is probably the most American thing about me.
