Desperate, Bjorn seeks Astrid Ingvarsdottir, a völva whose dwelling hums with ancient magic. She confirms his fears: Bjorn is Úlfhéðnar, a legendary wolf-warrior, his power a gift—or a curse—from Ran.  Astrid unveils a prophecy foretelling the return of the Nattmara, a being of pure shadow imprisoned beneath the North Sea. The Úlfhéðnar believe Bjorn is the key to the world's salvation, or its destruction. But Astrid’s knowledge comes at a devastating price: the Úlfhéðnar don’t serve Ran.  They serve the Nattmara, plotting to unleash its icy grip upon Midgard, ushering in an eternal night.
Bjorn finds an unlikely ally in Solveig Magnusdottir, a fierce shield-maiden ostracized for her own nascent shapeshifting.  She embodies the control Bjorn craves.  Bound by their shared curse and the looming threat of the Nattmara, they forge a fragile alliance.  Solveig guides Bjorn to harness the wolf within, their training steeped in ancient rituals and forgotten lore, pushing them to the limits of endurance.
Their quest intertwines with the power struggles of rival jarls, pawns in the Úlfhéðnar’s insidious game.  Bjorn uncovers a hidden family history, a legacy of both heroism and betrayal, revealing the truth about his father’s demise.  The encroaching darkness manifests not only within Bjorn but in the world around him: violent storms, unnatural cold, and a creeping dread.
As the Úlfhéðnar orchestrate a ritual to unleash the Nattmara, Bjorn, now master of his transformations, confronts their leader, a figure twisted by the shadow’s influence. The ensuing battle is a clash of raw power and cunning strategy, a desperate fight against the encroaching night.
