Is this okay?” All I could do was nod. “Nate, I need you to tell me this is okay.” His mouth was on my throat; it was the most okay I’d ever been.
“Yes.”

“You have to go with your gut, sweetie.”
“That’s what Aunt Susan said.” I squeezed the pillow tighter. “My gut wants to puke.”

What right did they have to try to poison someone outside of their precious little circle? To breed more hatred just because someone didn’t fit into their tiny little box?

I was doing either a very good or very bad impression of a goldfish at the moment.

I was old enough to know better but, damn it all, I wanted my mom. And since my mom didn’t want me, this woman who had taken me in and stood up to her own family to do it would take her place. I shut my eyes tight against the tears I couldn’t hold back.

“Sexuality and attraction isn’t as cut and dry as you’d like to think, you know.”

All I wanted to do was panic in peace, but evidently that was not an option for a spirit-seeing freak like me.

I couldn’t know this.
