Black to move. Suddenly, White’s Queen is no longer threatened by the Black Queen. The Black Queen is Pinned against the King by the White Bishop and can’t move. White will win the Queen, thanks to the deadly Pin (see Fig 10, above).

White to move. White’s Queen is Pinned against the King by the Black Queen and can’t move. But the White Rook and Bishop are still on the loose. The Rook has a nasty plan (see Fig 9, above):

The enemy King is your ultimate target and to win the game you have to work out a dirty, merciless plan to trap the fat old fool like a rat.

Chess will scare the pants off you at times. It will certainly make you angry. It may possibly cause you to visit the toilet more frequently than usual and it might even give you a big head.

But one thing is for sure.
