Summary of Modern Romance: by Aziz Ansari and Eric Klinenberg | Includes Analysis

Preview:

Modern Romance is a nonfiction book by the comedian Aziz Ansari and New York

University sociologist Eric Klinenberg. For years, Ansari has been doing comedy

on the absurdities of dating, recounting both tales from his own life and other

people’s. Eventually, the strangeness of modern dating was just too much to

handle. He never understood why that girl did not respond to his perfectly crafted

text message. He saw the bubbles indicating a response and then, nothing. It made

him question his behavior and whether technology has changed the way people

date. He decided to take things to the next level, and study modern romance

through focus groups and rigorous social science. The result combines humor and

true insight into this mixed-up world where a person can swipe right to begin a

romance and end a relationship via text message…

Since the majority of people no longer live on farms, marriages are not the only way to keep women from starving and men from having holes in their socks. Not to mention children are not created for the purpose of using them as free farm labor, either. As a result, people are now on the hunt for a perfect soulmate, rather than just marrying someone because they need to.

A mere eight percent of people aged 18 to 24 live with a spouse. The median marriage age is now in the late 20s. The census shows that these numbers have moved in tandem with the percent of educated young people in the country. In the last 50 years, the percentage of people under 30 with a college degree has increased from 15 percent to 34 percent. Instead of moving right into marriage, 50 percent of young people live at home while the other unmarried people live with roommates or alone.
